Come Walk With Me: A step forward in care & support for players with sports-related brain injury

Following the success of our Come Ride With Me programme, we’re proud to introduce Come Walk With Me – a new initiative designed to support former players living with sports-related brain injuries through walking and talking. Our first Come Walk With Me hub is now open in Wirral, led by former rugby player Duncan Hendry. Duncan brings lived experience and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by those navigating life after brain injury. If you’d like to join him for a walk and a talk, you can reach out directly by emailing duncanhendry@hotmail.com.
Why walking and talking helps
Walking is good for the body and has proven benefits for the mind too. Research shows that regular physical activity, such as walking, can reduce the risk of depression by up to 30%. Even a 10-minute brisk walk can increase mental alertness, energy and positive mood. Walking in nature boosts these benefits. A study found that 73% of young adults believe it’s easier to talk about mental health while out in nature, and the same proportion find it helps with loneliness.
Taking steps to better mental health together
At Head for Change, we know what it feels like to navigate a diagnosis of sports-related brain injury and want players to know they are not alone. Our Come Walk With Me programme offers a safe, supportive space for former players to share their experiences, find solidarity and take meaningful steps toward better mental health. We’re excited to expand this initiative across the UK later this year. If you’re interested in starting a local hub or joining a walk, please get in touch.
