I have taught in Bassaleg school for 43 years and am Assistant Headteacher – Safeguarding, Wellbeing, Attendance, Admissions and Transition Lead.

I joined Bassaleg as a PE teacher in 1983 before becoming Head of PE in the early 90’s. I introduced A Level PE and, at one point, had over 100 students following the course. In 2007 I became Welsh Secondary Teacher of the Year before moving into a leadership role in the school.

I joined Newport RFC when I started at Bassaleg in 1983 and played 197 games, scoring 109 tries. I was inducted in the Newport Hall of Fame in 2015. I also played for Wales B against France, winning abroad there for the first time in a strong team led by Spikey Watkins – I also played in the Hong Kong Sevens in 1986.

During my time at Bassaleg I have coached many successful sports teams at all age groups and in rugby Alix Popham and Ryan Jones played in my teams and since then, Aaron Wainwright, Rio Dyer and Brodie Coghlan have also gone onto represent Wales – they have all been excellent ambassadors for the game and for Bassaleg School.

I am passionate about the game and want to support its future ensuring that it is a safe game for all ages and gender.
